Billy Rutledge of Red Oak, Virginia passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the age of 99. Born in Charlotte County on August 28, 1923 to Henry and Lelia Rutledge.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and an avid hunter, outdoorsman, farmer/gardener, hard working man who loved working with his hands and living off the land. He served in the Army during World War II from December 1943 to December 1946 in the 699th Engineer Petroleum Distributing Company, working on the pipeline/refinery in Africa, China, India & Berma. He served his community as a member of the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Rutledge and Lelia Griles Rutledge; his wife, Nora Rutledge; his son, Ronnie Rutledge; great-grandson, Colton Osborne; great-great-grandson, Nathaniel Keeton; and brothers and sisters, Daniel Rutledge, Johnny Rutledge, Tom Rutledge, Dave Rutledge, Fannie Edgerton, Molly Foster, and Sarah Toombs.
Surviving are his children, Brenda Sword, Joy Royster (Eddie), Kenneth Rutledge (Alice), and Shelby Long (Barry); and grandchildren, Mark Dunn (Angie), Wendy Dunn, Teresa Osborne (Eddie), Daphne Lipscomb, Kevin Smith (Mary), Timothy Rutledge (Brittany), Melissa Snead (Kenny), Nora Lynn Puryear, and Joseph Long. He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023 from 7:00 p.m until 8:30 p.m. at Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home in Chase City and all other times at Billy’s home. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Public Fork Christian Church at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Jack Stewart and Reverend Roger Collier officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery.
