Jerry Wayne Hayes, 76, of Skipwith, Virginia passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2024. He was born July 29, 1948 in Chase City, Virginia and was the son of the late Robert Monroe Hayes and the late Gladys Marie Bennett Hayes.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Edith Mae Puryear Hayes; two daughters, Gena H. Carter (Vernon) of Clarksville and Christy Lee “Cricket” Smolnik (Matthew) of King George; and four grandchildren, Noah Hayes Carter (Baylee Byrd Roberts), Cooper Christian Carter, Collin Andrew Smolnik, and Chloe McKenzie Smolnik. He is also survived by his sisters, Joan Hayes Creedle (Wimpy) and Joyce Leggat (Ron); brother, Jimmy Dale Hayes; and many store buddies.
He was preceded in death by Orville Hayes Wilmouth (“Granny Bill”) who raised and mothered him; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Hayes who also helped raise him; and a special uncle, Joseph E. Hayes.
Jerry was well known as the Owner and Operator of Skipwith Grocery since 1973. In his store, he made a lot of friends and spent countless hours enjoying laughs and stories. He was a member of Black Branch Baptist Church and in his later years when he was not able to attend church, he worshiped by watching the services at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. He enjoyed bird hunting and gardening. Above all else, he loved and enjoyed his family. There will never be another husband, dad and granddad like him.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Horeb Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Grover Cleveland will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jerry’s memory may be made to Mount Horeb Baptist Church, 10077 Old Cox Road, Chase City, VA 23924 or New Hope Baptist Church, 2526 New Hope Rd Skipwith, VA 23968.
